A Historic Literary Venue at Hilltop Inn
From its beginnings in 1888, Hilltop Inn has served as a home to such notable literary guests as Mark Twain, Carl Sandburg, and Pearl S. Buck. You'll find the Hilltop in the town of Harper's Ferry between the Blue Ridge Mountains an hour from D.C. Thomas Jefferson, during a visit to Harpers Ferry, noted the meeting of the Potomac and Shenandoah Rivers and the encircling mountains as "worth a voyage across the Atlantic." The scene Mr. Jefferson described is visible from several of Hilltop's dining rooms, sun porch, and many of its guest rooms. The tranquil views of the woods, river, and mountains, together with the sense of history at Harpers Ferry, cannot help but provide a form of literary inspiration found nowhere else. More photos and information about the Hilltop can be found here. All in all, not a bad place for writing a novel.
About Harper's Ferry
First settled in 1732, the arsenal there supplied hardware to meet the unique requirements of the Lewis & Clark Expedition. The rifles, accessories, and "Indian Presents" obtained at Harpers Ferry were crucial to the success of the expedition. Harper's Ferry is chiefly significant for its place in the history of the abolitionism. On 16 October 1859 the antislavery leader John Brown seized the federal government's arsenal with the intention of using its store of 100,000 firearms to found a republic for freed slaves. The siege lasted only 36 hours, left ten dead, and was ultimately unsuccessful; Brown was later hanged for treason. The raid signalled a rising trend of violent resistance to slavery and helped precipitate the American Civil War. Most of the town has now been reconstructed as the Harpers Ferry National Historical Park More information about historic Harpers Ferry can be found here.
The phone number at the Hilltop Inn is (800) 338-8319 if you need to call, but please remember that Algonkian will take care of reservations. Please write us at algonkian@webdelsol.com if you have further questions, or phone our home office at 1-800-250-8290. We're looking forward to a great conference!
